Make Google the Default Search Engine on IE10

Filled under:

Internet Explorer 10 is the default browser of Windows 8. If you have already upgraded to Win 8, you might have experienced using it already. Or if you are using Windows 7, you might have upgraded from IE 9 to IE10.

You might have observed that Bing is the default search engine on Internet Explorer. No wonder as it is owned by Microsoft. It’s the same thing both on Windows 7 or 8. Bing is always the default search provider unless you changed it manually.

If you prefer to use Google Search rather than Bing, follow the steps below to re-configure your Internet Explorer 10.

Change Default Search Provider on Internet Explorer 10

Step 1: Launch Internet Explorer 10.

Step 2: Click the gear icon (Tools) at the top-right corner then select Manage add-ons from the drop-down options.

Step 3: Under Add-on Types tab, select Search Providers. You’ll see that the default search engine is Bing. If not, you might have changed it already or a program that you’ve recently installed on your PC changed it.

Step 4: Click Find more search providers… link at the bottom part of Manage Add-ons window.

Step 5: A new IE window will pop-up and you’ll be redirected to Internet Explorer Gallery website.

Step 6: Under Search Providers tab, click Google logo.

Step 7: In the next page, click Add to Internet Explorer button.

Step 8: Add Search provider mini-window will pop-up. Put a checkmark on Make this my default search provider and Use search suggestions from this provider

Step 9: Click Add.

Google is now the default search provider on your Internet Explorer. You can test it by opening a new tab then make a search. It is advisable to re-launch IE10 before doing so.

Alternative Method

You may also add Google Search on IE10’s search providers list by going to this link:

Click Add to Internet Explorer button and follow step 8 above.

Note: Changing the search engine provider will not affect the default homepage of IE10.
