How to Disable Plugin Hang UI in Firefox20

Filled under:

Mozilla has added plugin Hang UI for Windows in Firefox 20 which appears and allows the user to terminate not responding plugins like Flash before Firefox killing it after waiting for preset time 45 seconds.
Reason for Mozilla to create Plugin Hang UI: Firefox with Out-of-Process Plugin architecture automatically kills unresponsive plugin after waiting for 45 seconds. During this time, hanging plugin locks Firefox main process and makes it not responsive.
When Flash plugin hangs this Plugin Hang UI will be invoked after 11 seconds and a child process plugin-hang-ui.exe being created which shows the UI with following message.
“shockwave Flash may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the plugin now, or you can continue to see if plugin will complete”.
User can kill the plugin straight away without having to wait for browser to terminate it by clicking on “stop plugin” button on UI. Or he can click on “continue” button on Plugin Hang UI where Firefox eventually kills the unresponsive plugin after 45 seconds.

How to Print to PDF in Windows: 4 Tips and Tricks

Filled under:

pdf-printer-on-windows-8
Unlike most other operating systems, Windows still doesn’t include first-class support for printing to PDFs. However, PDF printing is still fairly simple — you can quickly install a free PDF printer or use the support included in various programs.
We’ll cover ways you can easily print to PDF, whether you’re on a home computer where you can install a PDF printer or you’re using a locked-down computer you can’t install any software on.

Install a PDF Printer

Windows doesn’t include a built-in PDF printer, but it does include one that prints toMicrosoft’s XPS file format.  You can install a PDF printer to print to PDF from any application in Windows with a print dialog. The PDF printer will add a new virtual printer to your list of installed printers. When you print any document to the PDF printer, it will create a new PDF file on your computer instead of printing it to a physical document.
You can choose from a variety of free PDF printers available online, but we’ve had good luck with the free CutePDF Writer. Just download it, run the installer, and you’re done. Just be sure to uncheck the terrible Ask Toolbar and other bloatware during installation.
On Windows 8, PDF printers you install will appear both in the classic desktop Print dialog and the Modern printer list.

Use a Program’s Built-in PDF Export

Some applications have added their own PDF-export support because Windows doesn’t have it natively. In many programs, you can print to PDF without installing a PDF printer at all.
  • Google Chrome: Click the menu and and click Print. Click the Change button under Destination and select Save as PDF.
  • Microsoft Office: Open the menu, select Export, and select Create PDF/XPS Document.
  • LibreOffice: Open the File menu and select Export as PDF.
You can generally create a PDF file from the print dialog or with an “Export to PDF” or “Save to PDF” option if the program supports it. To print to PDF from anywhere, install a PDF printer.

Print to XPS and Convert to PDF

Perhaps you’re using a computer that you can’t install any software on, but you want to print to PDF from Internet Explorer or another program without integrated PDF support. If you’re using Windows Vista, 7, or 8, you can print to the Microsoft XPS Document Writer printer to create an XPS file from the document.
You’ll have the document in the form of an XPS file you can take with you. You can convert it to a PDF file later with one of the following methods:
  • Use an Online Converter: If the document isn’t particularly important or sensitive, you can use a free web-based converter like XPS2PDF to create a PDF document from your XPS file.
  • Print the XPS File to PDF: Bring the XPS file to a computer with a PDF printer installed. Open the XPS file in Microsoft’s XPS Viewer, click File -> Print, and print the XPS file to your virtual PDF printer. This will create a PDF file with the same contents as your XPS file.

Quickly Create PDFs from Websites

If you’re using a computer without a PDF printer and you just want to print a web page to a PDF file you can take with you, you don’t need to mess around with any conversion process. Just use a web-based tool like Web2PDF, plug the web page’s address in, and it will create a PDF file for you. Tools like this one are intended for public web pages, not private ones like online-shopping receipts.

This would all be easier if Windows included a PDF printer, but Microsoft still wants to push their own XPS format for now.

Why Are There No Processes 1, 2, or 3 In My Windows Task Manager?

Filled under:

When you take the time to look at all the little details in Windows, you often find little curiosities. Like why, for example, are Process Identification Numbers 1, 2, and 3 never assigned to anything in the Windows Task Manager?
Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites.

The Question

SuperUser reader Agovizer took a long hard look at the table Process display table in the Windows Task Manager and came back with some questions, specifically:
What processes, if any, exist between PIDs 0 and 4 on Windows 7? Just out of curiosity what are the processes between 0 and 4, and also between 4 and 200 something.
We hopped over into the Task Manager on our machine and sure enough there were no processes assigned in slots 1, 2, and 3–although our PIDs jumped from 4 to 340, as opposed to his 4 to 200.

The Answer

SuperUser contributor G Koe closes the case in one swoop:
There is no Process ID 1, 2, or 3 because of how the NT kernel handle table works.
Handles are always multiples of four. The Kernel handle process object is used for both process handles and process/thread IDs. It happens that handle values all start at 0×4 (bit 2), and the InitialSystemProcess is the first process to be created, so it gets a PID of 4. Idle process isn’t actually a process and you can’t open it. It probably doesn’t have a real PID but most tools consider it to be 0.
More on the NT handle table here although this is only accurate for NT3-5(xp) , as Windows 7 now requires that you only reference kernel handles if attached to PsInitialSystemProcess.
Everything he suggests checks out: we’re missing 1, 2, and 3 (not multiples of 4) and every PID value in our list from 340 to 13136 is divisible by 4.

Have something to add to the explanation? Sound off in the the comments. Want to read more answers from other tech-savvy Stack Exchange users? Check out the full discussion thread here.

Why You Don’t Need to Run Manual Antivirus Scans (And When You Do)

Filled under:

mse-pc-is-potentially-unprotected
Do you regularly open your antivirus program and run scans? Microsoft Security Essentials and other antivirus programs think you need to, warning you that your computer may be at risk if you haven’t done so in a while.
In reality, these manual scans aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. You can generally ignore your antivirus and it will do its job in the background without any help from you, only alerting you when it finds a problem.

Why Manual Antivirus Scans Are Unnecessary

Your antivirus is always running in the background. It’s monitoring the processes running on your system, ensuring that no malicious processes are running. Whenever you download a new file or open a program, your antivirus quickly steps in, examining the file and comparing it to viruses before allowing it to run. If you download a virus, your antivirus will notice without you needing to scan anything. For example, try downloading the EICAR test file — your antivirus will leap into action and deal with the file without any manual scans needed.
This feature is generally known as background scanning, real-time protection, resident protection, on-demand scanning, or something like that
In other words, you don’t need to run manual scans because your antivirus has already checked every file for malware as it arrived. It’s also aware of all the software running on your system. Your antivirus program doesn’t need you to click a button — it’s already doing the work.
Your antivirus probably already runs its own manual scans, anyway. Antiviruses generally run system scans in the background once a week without interrupting you.
Microsoft Security Essentials’ message is particularly silly. If MSE really thinks a manual scan is necessary, MSE has the ability to perform the scan in the background instead of scaring its users into clicking a button.

When You Should Run Manual Scans

Manual scans are still useful in some cases, but you don’t need to regularly open your antivirus program and initiate them:
  • When You Install an Antivirus: When you first install an antivirus, it will perform a full-system scan immediately. This allows the antivirus to ensure your computer is in a clean state and that you don’t have viruses lurking in unopened files on your hard drive. After performing this scan, your antivirus can trust that your system is secure. However, it will still scan files for malware when you open them.
  • Check For Dormant Malware it Missed Earlier: Antiviruses use “definition files,” which are updated regularly. These files basically contain a catalogue of identified malware, and your antivirus compares programs you run to the catalogue to check whether they match. It’s possible that there’s a dormant virus lurking in an executable file deep on your hard drive that your antivirus missed during its first manual scan. If a virus definition has been added for that type a malware — or the antivirus’ heuristics have improved — it will only catch the dormant virus when you perform a manual scan. However, the virus will be caught if you try to run the file containing the virus or during a regularly scheduled full-system scan.
  • Get a Second Opinion: You should only have one antivirus program running at once, as multiple background-scanning antivirus programs can interfere with each other and cause problems with your computer. If you want to scan your computer with multiple antivirus programs, you’ll need to perform a manual scan with the second antivirus programinstead of using its background-scanning feature.

Why Background Protection is Better Than Manual Scans

You can optionally disable background scanning in some antivirus programs and just perform manual scans, but you shouldn’t.
Think of your computer as your house, and your antivirus’s background scanning protection as a security guard standing at your front door and frisking everyone who tries to enter your house. A manual scan is the equivalent of having the security guard search every inch of your house for intruders.
If you’ve already checking everyone who enters your house, you don’t need to search every nook and cranny of your house for malicious people. In fact, it’s much better to guard your door because so you can catch threats before they’re allowed in — if you catch someone lurking in a dark corner of your house or PC, who knows what they’ve been doing in the time between when they were allowed in and when you caught them. Once the software is running on your computer, it also has the potential to hide itself and prevent the antivirus program — and even the Windows Task Manager — from seeing that it’s running. Software that does this is generally known as a rootkit.
You want to catch the malware before the virus starts running on (and infects) your computer, so stick with automatic background scanning instead of manual scans. Even if you scan every program you download manually before running it, you should use automatic scans to get maximum protection against zero-day attacks and other security threats.

Some security suites may remove cookies when you perform a manual scan, referring to them as “threats.” This is a great way for the security suite to pretend it’s doing something valuable and justify its price tag. But you don’t need a full security suite, anyway — and you can always have your browser automatically clear cookies if you want to get rid of them.

How to Add Dropbox (and other cloud services) to Office 2013

Filled under:

sshot-40
Out of the box, Office 2013 is designed to integrate seamlessly with the cloud – just as long as it’s Microsoft’s SkyDrive service.
If you use other cloud services such as Dropbox or Google Drive you can obviously browse to your local folders in the Open and Save As dialogs but you cannot Add a Place (other than the two Microsoft services) to Office’s open and save dialogs.
This means that every time you use the Open or Save As dialog, you have to browse the computer to access your Dropbox’s folders. Of course, you can pin frequently used files but why not just have your cloud services available to you whenever you use an Office 2013 product? Obviously, Microsoft isn’t going to include competing cloud services into Office for you, but that doesn’t prevent you from adding them yourself.
After a little searching, we discovered a neat little script for adding cloud services such as Dropbox and Google Drive directly to Office.
First you need to download this tiny batch file. Your browser will probably tell you the file is potentially dangerous so you will need to tell it to keep it.
Once you’ve got the file, browse to its location  and double-click on it. When prompted, input your Dropbox’s local path and hit Enter. The script will then add Dropbox to Office 2013 and you’re almost done.
Next step is to actually add the Dropbox service to your Office installation. To do this, open the Account options and look under Connected Services –> Add a Service -> Storage. Choose the service you want to add. In this case we want to add Dropbox.
And that’s it, now every time you use an Office application, you will see your Dropbox listed in the Open and Save As screens.
If you ever want to remove a service, you can simply return to the Connected Servicessection in the Account screen and click Remove next to the service you no longer want.
We’ve found this is an excellent way to integrate popular cloud services into Office 2013 quickly and almost effortlessly.
There is one small drawback, if you want to add cloud services to all your Office installations, you will have to run the batch file separately on each machine and for each Office account. But, this takes all but a few minutes especially if you simply save the script to a removable flash drive, network location, or your Dropbox, and then run it as needed.
You’re not limited to Dropbox either, there’s also a script available for Google Drive and Microsoft also provides complete instructions on integrating any cloud storage service into Office 2013.

How to Save Time by Using Snapshots in VirtualBox

Filled under:

image

Snapshots are a massive time saver when you are testing settings and configuration for your Geek School testing. Read on to see how you can take advantage of them while following along with our articles.
The basic idea of a snapshot is that you setup your virtual machine exactly how you want it, take a snapshot, and then you can make any changes you want. You could even install something awful, because it doesn’t matter – all you have to do is roll back the snapshot, and your virtual machine will be exactly how it was before.
It’s the perfect way to do a bunch of testing and figure things out, without breaking your setup. Plus, it’s a virtual machine, so you could always reload it anyway. If you haven’t already read our article about setting up a test lab, you should do that first.

Taking a Snapshot

Taking a snapshot in VirtualBox is actually very easy, and when done can save massive amounts of time. To get started open up your Virtual Machine and click on the Machine menu item, then select Take Snapshot…
Since we will be snapshotting a clean install you will need to give your snapshot an intuitive name and description to remember this.
The virtual machine will then dim out periodically while a point in time snapshot is taken.

Reverting To a Snapshot

The purpose of reverting to a snapshot is so that you can go back in time to a particular state, in our case a clean state just after we installed the OS. Since we can only do this when the virtual machine is not on, go ahead and shut it down.
Then select your virtual machine from the list and switch over to the snapshots view. Here you will see a list of the various snapshots you may have taken. To restore to a snapshot simply right click on it and choose Restore Snapshot From the Context Menu.
For most situations you are going to want to uncheck the option to create a snapshot of the virtual machine current state. The reason being is that you will normally want to restore when you have broken something, there’s no point in taking a snapshot of a broken configuration.
You will then see that the “Current State” will become the same as the snapshot you selected to restore to.
Now when you power on the virtual machine you will see the virtual machine quickly reverting itself.
Always remember that without snapshots, recording the Geek School would be nearly impossible, so remember to use them and save yourself countless hours. That’s all there is to it.

How to Unsubscribe from Facebook Email Notifications?

Filled under:

Are you receiving tons of notification email from Facebook? You signed up for a Facebook account, added friends, started socializing with them and then after a few days you checked your e-mail and it surprised you to see that most of the e-mail you received are from Facebook. It's really frustrating most especially if you used a business e-mail to sign-up for a Facebook account. Now, how do you stop it?

Disable Email Notifications on Facebook
When you signed-up for a Facebook account, you should know that e-mail notifications are enabled by default. You need to manually disable it to stop Facebook system from sending you automatic alerts. Here's how to do it:

Step 1: Log-in to your Facebook account: https://www.facebook.com/
Step 2: Click the gear icon (Settings) at the top-right hand corner of your News Feed or timeline.

Step 3: Select Privacy Settings from the drop-down options.

Step 4: Go to Notifications tab.

Step 5: Under How You Get Notifications, click Edit link in Email.

Step 6: You have three options to choose:

a. All notifications, except the ones you unsubscribe from
b. Important notifications about you or activity you've missed
c. Only notifications about your account, security and privacy.

If you don't want to receive any notifications about the recent activities on your account, you can simply choose the latter option. You will only receive important notifications about the changes made on your account such as password change.

Alternative Method
You may also unsubscribe from email notifications straight from your inbox. Each notification email sent by Facebook contains Unsubscribe link which you can click to auto-unsubscribe without logging-in to your Facebook account.

It's still advisable to do the first method above to prevent clicking a link from malicious emails.

How to Install Skype Desktop Version on Windows 8?

Filled under:

Skype metro app is not what I need. I always do multi-tasking. I want to be on the phone while doing some stuff like browsing the internet, writing documents, playing games and many more. But with metro app, I’m stuck to one program.

I tried to find a way to install a desktop version of Skype. Luckily, I was able to find a workaround.

Installing Skype Desktop Version on Windows 8

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to install Skype for Desktop on Windows 8. It is a great alternative for Skype metro app.

Step 1: Download Skype for Desktop here: http://www.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-computer/
Step 2: Click “Learn about Skype for Windows Desktop” link. It is located below Get Skype for Windows 8 button.

Step 3: Click “Get Skype for Windows Desktop Window”.

If you are having trouble finding the download button, you may directly download Skype for Desktop installer from this link: http://download.skype.com/961f38761d13c0d87a888e2ccdad86fa/SkypeSetup.exe

Step 4: Run SkypeSetup.exe then proceed with the installation.

If you get User Account Control warning, click Yes.

Step 5: Installation will take a few minutes to finish. The program will create a Skype shortcut icon on your desktop automatically. The icon will be added on metro apps list as well. See example.

You can click the Skype icon from Metro UI and the program will open on your desktop.

If you initially installed Skype metro app, there might be two Skype shortcut icons that will show on Metro UI (Windows Start). Always click on Skype for desktop for your convenience.

Example of Skype for Desktop Shortcut icon on Metro UI in Windows 8
Skype for Desktop Compatibility Issue

You might ask if there will be a problem if you install Skype for Desktop on Windows 8. The answer is no. Even though Windows 8 is not included on the compatible Operating Systems on Skype for Desktop download page, it doesn't mean that the program won’t run on 8. You can install it anytime without getting errors.
